There are so many beautiful locations and attractions available to explore and discover in Northumberland, all within easy reach from Parmontley Hall and Low Haber. From the well known to the less traveled, you’ll find routes both rugged and relaxed, on and off the beaten path. From World Heritage sites, Wildlife Trust Reserves and National Parks to unspoilt coastline, bustling market towns and quaint villages, there's so much available locally for our holiday home owners to enjoy.
Hexham
Once a favourite haunt of marauding Vikings, the local town of Hexham now proudly holds the title of England’s favourite market town instead - as voted by Country Life magazine.
With a buzzing arts and culture scene, there’s so many things to do in Hexham. In the winding streets you can find plenty of beautiful historic buildings, art galleries, quirky music venues and eclectic independent shops all clustered around the Shambles, a Grade II market place which hosts a twice-monthly farmers market.
At the centre proudly stands Hexham Abbey, a medieval 12th-century church. You can enjoy regular events here including live music, films and quizzes, or you can simply explore the grounds and its history at your own leisure.
Northumberland Coast Path
The Coast Path stretches for 62 miles along a stunning coastline, winding past sandy beaches, across rugged headlands, alongside dramatic castles and through charming coastal villages. With ever-changing scenery and breathtaking views, it offers some of the most spectacular views in Europe.
You can explore the bustling harbour of the popular seaside village of Seahouses, discover its colourful fishing heritage, or visit Bamburgh Castle, which has stood proudly overlooking the dramatic coastline for more than 1,400 years.
Meet halfway between the two and you can head 2 miles off coast to the National Trust’s Farne Islands; home to an array of wildlife, including puffins, razorbills and the largest grey seal colony in the UK.
Northumberland National Park
We’re extremely fortunate at Parmontley Hall to be neighbours with the UK’s least populated (but no less popular!) National Park, where nature has space to breathe.
With every activity imaginable, it's a huge adventure playground. We recommend visiting Kielder Water & Forest Park for events, activities and walking trails. If you're more of an adventurer, try your hand at rock climbing, mountain biking, horse riding, or trout fishing at one of the numerous lakes -the choice is yours.
Or just take in the breathtaking views by exploring everything from waterfalls to woodland at nature reserves like Muckle Moss, Lindisfarne and Hauxsley. With over 400 square miles of wild open moorland for you to discover, it’s well worth the visit… or five!
Hadrian's Wall
Spanning coast to coast, this famous UNESCO World Heritage Site is only a short drive away from Parmontley Hall.
One of England’s most iconic landmarks, Hadrian’s Wall carries a rich heritage through its ancient stonework and remarkable Roman history. Set against a backdrop of dramatic views and rugged volcanic ridges, the landscape remains a powerful reminder of the frontier that once shaped this extraordinary place.
There’s history to be uncovered every step of the 73 miles, with ruined forts, Roman settlements, museums, cosy pubs and stunning views. In more recent times, George RR Martin has credited Hadrian’s Wall for the inspiration behind his own Wall in the bestselling books and hit TV series, Game of Thrones!
Alnwick Castle & Gardens
Take your imagination on a day out and take the trip up to Alnwick Castle, one of England’s most iconic castles. Dating back to the 11th century, it boasts a fascinating history having served as a military outpost, a teaching college, a refuge for evacuees and a family home, the ancestors of which are still there today.
It hosts a multitude of fun and educational events for all the family to enjoy throughout the year. And it's famous silhouette is easily recognisable, having been used as a location for various feature films and television series. You may recognise it as Hogwarts from the Harry Potter films or as the setting of several episodes of Downton Abbey!
The Lake District
One of the most popular holiday destinations in the UK, the Lake District is famous for stunning scenery. Lakes, forests and mountains make up this beautiful part of the North, and it’s no wonder it’s been designated as an UNESCO World Heritage Site!
Just an hour west of Parmontley Hall lies Ullswater, a charming gateway to the breathtaking Eden Valley. Venture a little further and you'll discover Windermere at the heart of the Lake District; home to stunning lakes, dramatic scenery and unforgettable adventures. From walking and abseiling to zorbing and kayaking, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Local Delights
With all the beauty surrounding us at Parmontley Hall, it’s easy to get caught up in exploring this beautiful part of the North, but we have plenty of things to do and explore just minutes from your door!
Nestled within the historic Whitfield Estate, you’re perfectly placed to explore the surrounding villages of Whitfield and Allendale, wander through peaceful woodlands, discover flowing rivers and local wildlife, experience live and clay shooting, and enjoy delicious home-cooked food at The Elk’s Head Pub, alongside a range of beers, ales and spirits.
